Dear users,

I've done some research on this, but I still have a couple questions that go unanswered.

So I own an iPhone 4 running 4.1 and it is locked currently, I called up my phone provider to unlock it about a week ago and they told me it will be unlocked on the next restore. I want to update to 5.0.1 because I can install Spire on it, and it won't be compatible on 5.1 due to some legal reasons and Chpwn won't release it.

If I use a custom 5.0.1 IPSW to update my phone, will my phone be unlocked or will it stay locked because its not connecting to the Apple servers or..? If it stays locked my best bet is to just upgrade to 5.1 then downgrade again I suppose?

I've never used custom IPSW so I'm a little in the dark with it, will I be able to upgrade my phone at a later date using official IPSW or am I stuck with custom ever since.

I apologize for the 'noob' questions, I've tried to get up to date with the information but its just confusing me!

Modem Firmware - 0.2.10.4
I have 5.0.1 SHSH blobs saved

Use Redsn0w to verify you have full hash files (Extras-SHSH-Query)
If your carrier has done a FUL, why use a custom IPSW since there is no need to preserve baseband.
Use Redsn0w to stitch the hash files to an IPSW. then iTunes to restore.

on 5.1 you have a tethered JB, on 5.01 an untethered JB
your choice.

But indeed if your provider unlocked it you don't have to preserve the BB
Make sure its unlocked prior upgrading, there no way back if it isn't unlocked

How do I upgrade from 4.1 to 5.0.1 then as I tried that the other day at my friends house but it kept doing Error 11 before the restore.. I had TinyUmbrella running and everything..

if it is not unlocked, I'll have to call the phone provider, get it unlocked and restore again wouldn't I?

In TU advanced tab uncheck set host to cydia, close TU

For the rest you don't need TU to restore.

In redsn0w go to Extra's/SHSH blobs/Stitch

select the stock 5.01 IPSW (download), make sure your phone is unlocked, this will upgrade your BB to 4.11.08 which is unlockable

redsn0w wil now make a custom IPSW with your SHSH/APticket stitched to it

Put phone in DFU

ALT-restore with the custom IPSW

afterwards jailbreak with redsn0w

You don't need to restore to get it activated, you can use SAM (repo.bingner.com) to deactivate your phone, when you connect to iTunes it should activated with the congrats message.

Apparently you decided not to look over the link I provided for you.
