Looking to use my 11" 2012 Air as a desktop too. I know this isn't a powerful machine, so I suspect if I get a large monitor, that it could cause performance issues as the macbook has to work harder to output a higher resolution.

So what would be the largest screen size that would not cause any slowdown?

Also, is there any significant benefit to getting a monitor that has thunderbolt, as opposed to using a minidisplay port adapter that has an HDMI or DVI connection?
