Questions about importing and exporting contact and calendar information..

Hey everyone, I have a question that hopefully someone can help me with. I have basically my whole entire life within my phone. Like everything. I'm scared that if I somehow break it or lose it, I'll lose all of my friends numbers and everything in my calendar and will never be able to get it back. Is there anyway I can export all of my contact information and calendar onto gmail so I won't ever run into this problem? I tried setting up Outlook with gmail for Outlook 2000 and it wouldn't work for some reason, so I was hoping I could export directly to gmail and then import that information onto a replacement phone incase anything happens.
