I was told by AT&T that my phone is eligible for a factory unlock but it would require me go through the steps below.
My question is do I need another SIM to unlock it? I just want to have it unlocked b/c I am going to be traveling abroad and most likely buying SIM's in other countries. But according to step 5 below, I need insert a new SIM as part of the restore/unlock process. Can someone help clarify for me?
To complete the unlock, simply:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.
2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
3. Backup your iPhone.
4. Erase the contents of your iPhone.
5. Swap the old SIM card with one for the new carrier.
6. Complete the Setup Assistant.
7. Restore your backup.
8. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.
