So i currently own a 4 GPS, which i'm happy with, apart from 2 things. 1.\ Having to have my iPhone close by when exercising so i can listening to Spotify 2.\ Having to gesture to view light the screen to see what time it is.

So my questions are as follows.

If i go to a 5 cellular, does it pull data? or can it just take cellular calls? Most importantly can i use Spotify without my iphone near by and just have my air pods, while carrying out an outdoor exercise.

Also the 1hz always on.. How does that work say when you're working out. I know it'll probably work well when you're looking at the static time, but with heart rate and seconds changing constantly, will the screen constantly update, or is the always on, only good for viewing the time without the wrist gesture to wake it?
 
I’m not a Spotify user, but I have a feeling only Apple Music can stream to the Watch directly. Apple Music definitely can.

The workout display slows it updates when it’s dimmed / in AOD mode and resumes the normal rapid update when you wake it. You get most of the data, but without the tenths and hundredth of a second numbers.

The AOD is an awesome feature (now watch a handful of people who have never tried it paste below how it isn’t - I’ve seen hardly any S5 owners say it isn’t great).

Your concern will be battery life. Partly due to the display but more due to LTE streaming which hits the battery hard, and the AW is already pretty compromised for people whose workouts are long duration.
 
I have a series 5 cellular and for me, it is worth the extra monthly price for cellular service.

I can easily get through the day (battery wise) unless I am exercising, as I exercise longer than a lot of people. That means I need to get a quick charge in before exercising, or use my series 3 during my run.

I use an infograph watch face and keep everything turned on, except for background app refresh, which is limited to a few select apps.

A lot of times battery life can change, depending on the watch and complications used.

If you do a lot of email, messages and texting on the watch, as well as streaming music, battery life will definitely take a hit. That is why I use a different watch face when I am running. I don’t listen to music when running, and I don’t want to be disturbed in any way, unless it is an emergency.
 
Battery life doesn't bother me, i have a charger always at hand if need be. Today on my 4 i'm still at 53% and that's after 80mins of exercise. As long as it doesn't die on me before i go to bed, i don't give a rats if its at 10% or 20% So it doesn't look like Spotify works via LTE on the watch itself boooooo.... Maybe its time to give that Apple Music a try. So I can just get a subscription to Apple Music and listen on the watch no phone nearby needed and cycle ?

The integration with Apple Music is really fluent. If you have a free trial, take advantage of it. Where it’s bliss, is if you have your Apple Watch streaming your music directly to your AirPods, [assuming you own a pair], it works flawlessly. One of the strongest points by the Apple Watch is the direct streaming.
