Questions about sleep mode

Hello,

I just have a few question about sleep mode on an apple....when i close the lid after using the computer without turning it off it goes into sleep mode i do believe. When in sleep mode is the computer still using battery? Also when in sleep mode is it safe to transport in a laptop bag?
