I used to Excel and recently switched to Mac using Open Office spreadsheet. I have 2 questions and would fully appreciate all help.

A) How to make the font bigger
B) When I highlight the box, the default blue is too faint. Can the colour be changed?

Thanks so much.

The toolbar should have the option for font size, just like Excel.

See the preferences for changing colors.

For problem "b" you could try using NeoOffice instead of OpenOffice.org.

NeoOffice is based on OpenOffice.org's code but with added Mac features. One of those features is native text highlighting, which is slightly darker than the OpenOffice.org implementation.

As for problem "a" a quick google reveals this most recent thread and it seems a worksheet font can not currently be increased or decreased in size.

Thans for reply.

I'm using a 17" MBP and the problem of the smallish font size is even exegerrated. Well, seems like I have to wait for the upgrade version, if any.

I don't intend to change to other NeoOffice since I'm begining getting used to OpenOffice. Seems like Excel is more user friendly. May consider getting Office for Mac (hopefully no such problem).

2. For the color change, that is a System level change. Go to System Preferences > Appearance. Then select the highlight color you want.

1. The font size can be changed, but not as a preference. But another way to handle this is to use the zoom feature in the lower right corner of the Calc window. Double click the 100% and a window comes up and change it to variable (lower left side of window). Set it as 125 and see if that works.

OpenOffice.org doesn't use native text highlighting, but (imperfectly) attempts to emulate it. Which is why i suggested NeoOffice as an alternative solution to the problem.

That seems to only change the font for cells. As indicated in the picture they attached the OP wants to change the size of the font in the worksheet tab. This doesn't seem to be possible at the moment, and is unlikely to fixed any time in the near future.

NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org are practically identical, so any skills you have developed with OpenOffice.org will translate to NeoOffice. NeoOffice just has a few extra tweaks to make it a better Mac application.

I did went to preferences but seems not working. I also wonder why. Have I miss it?

Your image was blocked by my work firewall, so I didn't get exactly what you were after. There doesn't seem to be an option to make the sheet tab text size larger, though I did manage to make it smaller by turning off it's use of system fonts. The screen zoom option might be sufficient though. As mentioned by exegete77, the highlight color is controlled by the system setting. I didn't see a way to overwrite this.
