I spent a lot of time on the XS Max and was ultimately disappointed with the white color temperature and screen uniformity. Decided to pickup an XR just to compare and wow I'm actually quite impressed. Perhaps I'm missing something here but in most cases I prefer the XR display. Text looks equally as crisp to my eyes, whites are cooler, and screen uniformity is better. The only difference I see is the XR has a sharp brightness reduction when tilting off-axis. And obviously in cases where black's are shown you can slightly see the backlight.
I'll take some pictures in a bit to try and depict this. I'm sure I'll get some hate for this but I'm a bit puzzled with my results.
Not everything is flawless though, bezels are obviously bigger and it looks like my cellular download speed is nearly half of that of the XS Max. Speakers are also not as "full" as the XS Max. Guess I'll have to decide what I ultimately prefer...lots of pros and cons for each.
