Quick Downgrade Question!

First time downgrading and I'm gonna downgrade my 3GS from iOS4 back down to 3.1.2 but was just wondering...

After I downgrade, when it asks to either "Restore from backup" or "Restore as new phone" (or however it's worded) since my latest sync backups are from iOS4, am I going to be able to "Restore from backup"?

I'm actually just wanting to keep my SMS so don't care about anything else really.
