Just take a flat head to the inner part and pry out the inner plastic part. I use it to hold my EarPods in my backpack. The lid comes off easily, but not a biggie for me. Seems a little weird to mod what is already essentially an EarPod case to store your EarPods. I didn't like wrapping them around that thing, took to long. It looks nice too.

I always enjoy a Maguyvered approach, in this case making a plastic landfill item into something useful. I, for one, wouldn't have the patience to put the phones back into the display case as initially received even once, let alone with regularity. Fiddly to the max.

If you tire of the case and want something forgiving, there are fabric zipped cases from headphone manufacturers available empty for reasonable prices. Nice to the touch and forgiving to the bag or pocket you stuff it within with less of a read when pressed against the backpack or pocket fabric. Two brands of cases that come to mind are Westone and Shure.
