Quick Question About Drives

I have a question, when I reinstalled Mac OS X, my Macintosh HD doesn't appear on my desktop. Also, when I insert a USB thumb drive, the drive icon doesn't appear on the desktop. There must be some setting somewhere that needs to be checked or unchecked, right? Please help.
 
Finder -> Preferences -> General
