What are you using to record with? This will determine your zooming capability. Typically you will be using a DV camcorder or your iSight webcam. If it's the iSight then no, you can't zoom. If it's your camcorder, then the zoom is dependent on that. Using a camcorder you'll record onto tape first, then copy that over, so you're not technically 'recording with iMovie'.
