im aware that iTunes can burn music CDs but does a mac come with its own CD burning software, either integrated or stand-alone, that can burn data CDs or would i need to aquire third party CD burning software?

The Mac OSX 10.2 Finder has built in basic burning functionality. If you need more advanced functionality Toast seems to be well liked.

Actually the built in software in OSX is a bit more than basic. However, the documentation is mostly in Apple Knowledge Base Articles.

For instance, you can do multisession CDs with the provided utilities.

And you can make exact duplicate of CDs. But you have to do that the rigAht way.
