Quick question in relation to conversion of movies.

So I have an iPhone and an Apple TV. My macbook doesn't seem to want to accept movies into my iTunes library. Now I know I must convert my files so that they're acceptable for iTunes, but I do not know a program that does this free. Quicktime Pro is too slow.

Any suggestions so I can get my movies onto my iPhone/AppleTV?
