Quick Question (ip4 upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.1)

I wanted to upgrade my iphone 4 (4.1) JB to a higher one for more function with some cydia apps ... i know how to do and all that with blobs i just wanted to confirm ... this will essentially wipe my phone (im talking non-JB data) and leave me with a basically "default" phone rite?
 
So i got 4.2.1 (JB) on there now ... but i did a restore from backup so i kept my photos / contacts only. Is there anything bad about doing this? (Like should i have chosen to restore as new then JB instead of restore old backup then JB) ?
