Quick Question on Airport Card

Is the only wireless thing these can connect to are apple baste stations?
Or can they connect to other wifi types, like how PC laptops can?

I think my school has some kind of wireless access setup for people with laptops, but im pretty sure its not an airport base station.

apple airport card works fine with a PC wireless base station cause in my school they use cisco wi-fi routers and it works fine with apple's ibook and ti powerbook.
