Quick question on Blu Ray drives

If I get a USB Blu Ray drive, can I just plug it into my MBP and rip my movies through handbreak? I have around 70 movies on my hard drive at the moment, and i have around 20 blu ray movies that didn't come with digital copies. I would love to get copies of these movies on my hard drive, but obviously my computer does not have a blu ray drive. Any help would be great.
