Quick question on iPhone 3gs jb/unlock

So I have an iPhone 3gs I want to unlock and jailbreak. It's running iOS 5.0 at the moment. I see a lot of people saying that the next jailbreak will be for 5.0.1. Is it safe to update the phone to 5.0.1 or should I stay with 5.0?
