Im going to italy with my iPhone 3g thats unlocked, can i purchase a prepaid sim over there and put it in my phone and it'll work?

Yes, as long as it is unlock it will work, the 3G radio is a quad band radio, so it will support all the bands supported around the world. I believe vodaphone have nice 3g service around italy.

Yes, although you may find it hard to buy a SIM in Italy since the government has stricter requirements for getting a SIM.

Just make sure you read up on the country specific rules, since when I was in Italy a few years back it was very difficult to find a place that would actually sell me a SIM since I was foreign.

You should be fine, most large telecoms have special plans for travelers, they just get all your info, like passport and such.
