Has anyone set up their new phone with a wired connection using a thunderbolt or USB 3.2 cable? I am going from a 15Pro Max to a 17 Pro Max and have always done a restore from my Mac's Finder backup. I thought I would try connecting a Thunderbolt 3 cable between the two devices this year and see if it's quicker.

Funny, last month I tried that for the first time (15 Pro Max to 15 Pro Max, from an AppleCare replacement). I usually restore from iCloud but thought what the heck, lets try wired directly with thunderbolt.

Honestly it took several hours, and I don't have heavy storage use. And then when it was finally complete, it felt similar to iCloud restore where it's downloading all the apps and such still. I was expecting it to be much quicker.

That stinks. I guess I'll try the wireless Quickstart setup this time. For the past 12 years or so I've always done the Mac/finder back up and restore. I always have to repair my Apple Watches afterwards. I noticed last year when I setup my wife's iPhone 16 Pro her Apple Watch transferred over automatically.

I mean I don't want to stop you from giving it a try. But I have noticed over the years restoring from iCloud backup has improved drastically. Most things move over seamlessly, like the Watch.
