My primary language is English however more and more I'm needing to write in German.
If looked though the language options and there doesn't seem to be anything that allows me to easily switch between the two languages.
I ideally need the same option as on iOS where I can just click and change the spell check options within a few seconds without going in to system preferences each time.
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Have you tried language settings? I actually switch between Spanish and English all the time with no problem. OS X is intelligent enough to automatically switch between both languages as needed.

I have cmd-space do a switch between two last-used languages, and holding the keys brings up a list of all my defined languages.

System Prefs / Keyboard / Shortcuts / Input Sources
