Using Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 I find it difficult to opening some MPEG videos in Quick Time Player. I tried to upgrade but cannot get above version 10.0 in Quick Time Player. My actual problem is with iDVD being the videos cannot be loaded. Any suggestions ?

As far as I can see, you need the MPEG-2 Playback Component for QuickTime, available via the Apple Online Store.

Or you simply use VLC Player, but since you want to get that footage into iMovie, you need to transcode it via MPEG Streamclip to a QuickTime file (.MOV) using the Apple Intermediate Codec.
For that, you need that MPEG-2 Playback Component, but there may be ways around this nowadays, though I do not know them.
