I'm thinking about buying Quick Time Pro but I hesitate do to so. Is there a chance QT 7 might be coming soon or is it still safe to get QT 6.5 pro now? (I assume I would have to pay again for QT pro 7 even if it was released tomorrow, right?)

Thanks for your advice!

Firstly, I doubt we'll see any major new versions soon, but it's possible. If you want to see a history of Quicktime releases to look for trends, go here.

In the past, Apple have usually allowed QuickTime keys from the previous major version to work in a new one, eg a QT3 key would work in QT4, a QT4 key would work in QT5, but a QT3 key would not work in QT5 (I'm just making up these numbers though, it might have been slightly different, and I'm not sure if it's always been this way). I don't think there were any free upgrades to version 6 because (quoting Apple) "QuickTime 6 includes royalty-bearing technologies".

So it's hard to say if an upgrade to QT7 would be free (after looking on Apple's website I couldn't find anything about it). It probably depends on what technologies Apple includes in it and whether they have to pay royalties on it.
