Is there a way to add punctuation marks at the end of a selected word without having to hit the backspace button then enter it manually?

You shouldn't have to hit the backspace button for anything other than apostrophes and quotation marks (from my experience...there may be other punctuation marks that retain the space). Other than that, iOS drops the space. Regardless, you do have to enter punctuation manually.

Try just typing the ? or . after selecting your word. It automatically backspaces for you.
