I have Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones that I use with my AppleTV by going to settings and deleting them under devices. However, when I want to quickly use them it is a bit of a hassle, especially if I am watching something and need to leave the app to go to settings. My AirPods just pop right up when I take them out, and I get that they are Apple so that is likely why, but when I am in an app and open the settings overlay screen that pops up the Sony headphones do not show up there either, even though they have been paired previously.

Is this just the way it is since they are not an Apple product, or is there a way to get them to show up on the settings overlay?

Thanks

Why do you delete them from Settings? Can the Sony not be paired to more than one device at the same time? I have Bose NC headphones paired to my MBP and Apple TV. If I stand near ATV and simply turn on headphones, they immediately connect to ATV. If I’m near MBP, the same.

Can't speak for the XM5s but my SM4s can pair to at least 2 devices.

I do not delete them from settings, they display in the list there. The problem is they do not automatically pair and I have to go into the settings to select them to get them working, and they do not display in the small settings menu (not sure what it is called) when you press and hold the button on the lower right and select the Audio option.

The headphones do pair with multiple devices, I have used them with the TV, my iPad and my MBP. Although now that I think about it, it doesn't automatically connect to any of those devices, I need to manually select them from the bluetooth options on those other devices....

But the headphones do not automatically connect to any of those devices...

I'm sorry... which is it? Do you have to delete them and repair them before you can connect (Your first post). Your posts appear contradictory.
Sorry if my explanation was not clear.

All of my headphones display, including the Sony headphones display in the settings list for bluetooth, and they can all be manually selected from there

However, they do not automatically connect EXCEPT my airpods

I would like if my Sony headphones would automatically connect like my AirPods do without needing to go to the settings and bluetooth options window

Instead, if I am watching something and I need to switch to headphones due to other people coming in the room, I need to leave the app, go to settings, click on bluetooth option, and select the Sony headphones from the list to make them connect

Does that make sense?

However, they do not automatically connect
According to the User Guide online, your headphones will auto-connect to the last connected Bluetooth device. If the last connected Bluetooth device is not your Apple TV, then you'll have to manually connect via Settings.

Sounds like you need to enable this feature -

Happy to have read the User Guide for you ;) Good luck!

Thanks so much, figured it was a AppleTV setting, didnt even think about a headphones thing....

Is there an app you can use to toggle connections? I have the Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones which support being simultaneously connected with two devices but I use them with three devices, my iPhone, iPad, and MBP. The Sennheiser iPhone app remembers all recent Bluetooth pairings so I can use it to toggle between devices (ie: if the headphones are automatically connected with the iPad and iPhone and I can use the app to disconnect from my iPad and connect to my MBP instead; I don’t have to do anything with the settings on either the iPad or MBP).

I will look into this, thanks

Also OP, have you tried opening Control Center on the Apple TV to connect. Your Sony headphones should be there to be selected. Much faster than clicking through Settings.

Although reading again is Control Center what you mean by "settings overlay"?
