Everyone raves about this application yet i dont understand what it does. It just searches for applications and has a list of actions of what to do with it. Seems boring and not that helpful

It can really speed up your day....
Give it a try...can't hurt, can it?

BTW I don't use it but can see why others do...

You can do just about anything with it. You should go into the plugins section of the preferences, and download the plugins you need.

its just that the dock seems more convenient

what can some plugins do?

With Qicksilver you can launch any application (and open most documents) with very few key strokes.

With the Dock you need to use the mouse which is less ergonomically correct. Also, unless you start having lots of folders in your Dock (which makes it less efficient) it will get crowded and unusable very quickly even on very large screens.

Well, you can control iTunes from Quicksilver, send IM's from within it using iChat, access your files and manipulate them... The posibilities are nearly limitless.

I use it because I absolutely HATE having too many icons in my dock. So when i want to launch something outside of the bare minimums I have on my dock, all i do is hit the Quicksilver hot keys (for me it's Command + Space and yes i know thats Spotlight but i don't care) and type in the first four letters of the app. very easy :)

Can Quicksilver control System Prefs?

Energy saver, to be precise.

If you start typing "ener..." it will pop up and all you have to do is hit enter to open the pref pane. If you are looking for an app that changes properties in pref panes without user input then no. Or not that I am aware of.

I want to set up Hot keys to switch between:

Highest performance
&
Longest battery life and Reduced Processor.

Can it do this?

If you have another app or script that does that action ..then you can use Quicksilver to assign a hotkey to it. It can't do it by itself.

you might be interested in this (link to PDF). it's an 89-page QS user's guide.

i use QS to launch applications and i have F1-F8 assigned to do specific tasks. it's also an alternative to Spotlight (though not a replacement).
