My iMovie events folders contains many clips created by iMovie 9 as mov files. I can view these mov files using Quicktime (10.2) without the need of starting the iMovie.

With Mavericks, however, Quicktime (10.3) starts to "convert" the mov file before it plays. Apparently it is converting the mov file to yet another mov file. When I quit Quicktime, it asks me if I wish to save this converted file as filename(Converted).mov. The Converted file is nearly double the size of the original!

Upon comparing the original file with the "converted" file, I noticed that the original file is Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM, Timecode whereas the converted file is Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, Timecode.

This mandatory conversion happens only in Mavericks and playing the same mov clip in Mountain Lion plays normally without this bizarre conversion.

Does anybody have any idea what's happening here?

And by the way, the good old Quicktime 7, running under Mavericks, plays the original mov files without bothering to convert .
