Hi, I tried searching for this but could not find an answer.

I am thinking of upgrading to quicktime pro but I have some questions:

1) Is the Pro license a lifetime license? Or when Quicktime 8 comes out will I have to purchase a new license?

2) If I would need to purchase a new license - any idea when Quicktime 8 would come out? I know apple is very secretive, but perhaps someone can give me an idea of their general lifecycle for Quicktime based on past releases. Would it be likely a new version would be released alongside Snow Leopard? I wouldn't mind waiting for that.

You would have to get a new license.

It is very likely considering that Apple has stated such.

Ogg Theora is improving in quality extremely quickly (the upcoming Thusnelda encoder looks darned near h.264, IMHO) and has no commercial or for-pay license associated with it. The upcoming Firefox 3.1 will play Theora files natively, no codec or plugin required. Open standards are the way to go if you're looking for long-term viability.
