quicktime mpg file with srt subs

mpg file plays with quicktime but quicktime doesn't pick up the srt subtitle file of the same exact name(bar the ext of course)

i have perian and quicktime is all updated. perian works well with avi files.

yes i know that with vlc it works. just wondering why perian doesn't work with mpg files.
