Hey everyone,
I've been having problems with Quicktime lately. Though I mostly watch .mkvs with VLC or Movist, I installed Perian so I could also open them in Quicktime and make use of its easy trim and export capabilities. It looks like the easiest OSx solution so far because it bypasses transcoding or ugly clipping (and mostly paid) software. It's not perfect though, because adjusting the clipping 'needles' is glitchy, and anyone who edits short clips knows you need precision. I recently noticed Quick Look doesn't work as well as it did before. Mkvs are playable but you can't jump forward in the movie timeline. Subtitle rendering is just ugly, because the font is way over 24-30px, as if coded to a bigger screen. I'm using Perian 1.2.3 and have Quicktime 7 installed. I also have an array of other players installed, like MPlayer and MPlayerOsxExtended. I don't know if this makes any difference, but right now my default .mkv player is Movist.
Here's what I would like to have: flawless (not choppy) mkv playback in Quick Look, because VLC takes some time to open and sometimes I just want a peek, decent subtitle options (or some way to change the 'default' size), and (eventually) proper thumbnails. Windows has done this for a few years now, so how hard can it be?
What do you guys think?
