quicktime player broken?

how come i cant open movies with the quicktime player my macbook came with? the movie files are in rmvb format. is it because quicktime doesnt support this type of file format?
is there anything i can do in order to watch movies and dvds on my macbook?

Isn't that a good enough reason? I haven't encountered rmvb files, but VLC or Plex might be able to handle 'em.
