I downloaded a movie that was about the 30th apple aniversery and it was a .mov file. Then, i try to open it and I get a quicktime error as follows:

QuickTime cannot open the file: "apple.mov"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)

How can Quicktime not understand a .MOV file?????

please help and thanks in advance!

hm, I went to the web link and it says the same thing :( But it must work, becasuse other people said they saw it and wrote comments about it.

Try opening it with VLC media player. That should work. My guess is that, though it shows a .mov extension, it's probably an mpeg1. Anyway, it opened with VLC 0.8.4.

Also, though, are you sure you have the latest Quicktime? Is it possible it uses a DIVX plugin or somesuch? The .mov file is a wrapper, sort of... that is, it can contain any codec. Not necessarily just ones QT can understand. Although it's odd that a video about Apple, with a thumbnail of it playing in QT, would not play in QT for you.

Thanks for your help everyone! I got it to play with the VLC player.
