Is there a plugin to play a .rm (real media) file in quicktime?

Not that I know of no. Unfortunately, you'll have to add Real Player to your list of video players.

Honestly, just download VLC and Real Player and you shouldn't have any problems with any extensions.

Why should this person download VLC if it also doesn't play Real Media files?

That's like telling someone to download the Microsoft Office 2004 Test-Drive because they can't open a Pages file.

rm, rmvb is copyright protected format of real, under mac, only realplayer can play it.
