If I had to guess, the file
1) really encoded with a crappy ".mov" encoder not understood by Quicktime (or really any other application) or...

2) wasn't encoded in .mov in the first place. The file name was just changed

If it is 1, then I'd second trying VLC Player. It works on pretty much anything! Maybe then download something like HandBrake (which works using VLC) to convert the file to something more understandable...

Click the "Tell Me More" button in the dialog. Post what it tells you.
If nothing happens, then post that fact.
