ok, I figured it out, I posted this in the Apple Discussions thread:

It would interesting to know if yours is colour profile related, and how you generated that profile. SPyder 2 profiles don't cause the purple, for example.

Also, remember to quit Quicktime X in between - it obviously uses the profile it reads upon loading the app.

Yes I know yours is probably fine. Looks like this will only be an issue with people who use certain custom Colour Profiles, in particular, one generated using ColorEyes software.
