After most of a year with the M1 mini, I have come to realize that the lack of fan noise can become quite obsessive. For the first time since the "computer revolution" my basement mancave is totally silent. Well, almost, if you don't count the clickity-clackity of my IBM M type keyboard - no complaint, I love it.

My other machine is a Linux box, a full tower almost 8 years old, but still quite powerful - 4 core, 32 gig, ssd, etc - but it comes with the legacy Intel 'whoosh' of processor, power supply and case fans. Intel and AMD still make good chips, despite the deluge of YouTubers who have certain knowledge of their pending bankruptcy at the hands of Apple, but they come with the birthright of HEAT.

The tower began to become irritating when powered up and I began the search to find peace and tranquility again. But, despite lots of perusing of gamer and upgrade sites, and spending considerable bucks on much bigger and slower fans, I can still hear it, and that is totally unacceptable. So now what to keep my sanity? Water cooling? Even those come with fans. Maybe use a earthsumped heat pipe down to the water table, like super-high end AC units? Of course, with that kind of money, I could buy a 28 core Mac Pro. Quiet, but still comes with fans.

An M1 running Linux would be the fix, but unfortunately, while that would be a 747 upgrade, the good folks over at the free/Free foundation are still in the Piper Cub stage of making *nix run on 1 Infinite Circle Silicon.

A major problem, as you can see, needing more advances in technology - and asap.

Oh yes. Anybody know how I can make my coffee in the morning without having to listen to the irritating sound of the boiling water?

It's something that won't make me go back to Windows : have to get a computer with noisy fans 😁

Mac mini and MacBook air are so nice for that : silent, look nice, enough powerful for me

The heat and noise from my old Alienware P4 was what made me switch to a Mac. I was in the Apple store and felt the top of the Mini. Mildly warm. And no noise I could hear. I asked the floor walker how long it had been on and he said "Hours". I said "Sell me one".

I'm the opposite. No, I do not want noisy, but fans on computers (at idle levels) have always served as a comfortable white noise generator for me. Aside from the fact that this masks my tinnitus (it is never silent in a silent room for me) in some weird way it's comforting.

There are however fans I do find quite annoying.
