Hi there,

Some time ago when I wanted to add a big HDD to my 5,1 to use exclusively as a TimeMachine Backup drive I decided on the Seagate EXOS 16TB spinner mainly due to its performance, price and the few positive reviews I read here.

However in use I have found it to be noisy in the confines of the MacPro case where I can even hear it seeking through the ceiling downstairs when it is quiet in my living room so I need to look for something quieter.

It doesn't need to be a high performance drive so I would consider something spinning at 5,400rpm if it does at least offer a decent performance but it needs to be much quieter than this current HDD and possibly an Enterprise class drive.

I would also like to use the same drive in my next Synology NAS so I can just keep a single spare on the shelf in case of failure in either 5,1 or NAS.

I have an old Synology RS812 and have always used Western Digital drives in it with no issues. Started off with 4 x 1TB WD drives and replaced all four with 4TB WD4000F9YZ back in 2015 and still healthy with zero errors reported.

NAS is showing its age now and drive capacity is almost full so time for a new NAS and a bunch of drives so figured I might as well standardise all of my spinners on the same make & model starting with the 5,1 as the noise is starting to get to me and spoils the otherwise whisper-quiet Mac Pro so looking for suggestions on what drives I should shortlist.

As I have mentioned absolute performance is not a top priority any more although it is of course important as I don't want a poor performer but at the top of the list has to be a quiet spinner.

Suggestions? WD Gold maybe?

Thanks & kind regards,
