Woah.

I just quit finder, making all my desktop icons disappear but everything else remaining the same. I'm almost positive that I was previously unable to quit finder; is this a feature of 10.4.8? Anyone else notice this? It's very strange to not have finder running.

How did you quit it?

To my knowledge, the ability to quit Finder can only be added through Terminal commands or apps like TinkerTool. It's not an available option out of the box.

I just pressed apple-q! I could also go to Finer->Quit Finder.

And no, it doesn't restart! It quits!

very strange, and i don't have tinkertool...

Well, that's exactly what happens when you've managed to enable the Quit item in the Finder menu. You can do it via Terminal or as I mentioned through a third-party app.

Do you have any of those maintenance/GUI tweaking apps like OnyX, Tweak Freak, or Tweaker?

i use a the script "finder quiter X" quite often.

I've been doing so since 10.4.5

i have onyx, maybe i tweaked a feature by accident? i don't really see the point of quitting finder, it kinda scares me

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. In OnyX, check the Appearance --> Finder pane. Is the item "Show Quit item" checked? If so, uncheck it and Finder should relaunch with the option disabled.

oh!! problem solved, it was onyx:
