Gosh, these guys who have always seemed so preternaturally young, and enthusiastic and lively; I really liked The Monkees - and some of their tunes were great. When I was a kid, I remember seeing their TV series and thinking that it was amazing; as a kid, I wanted to be a part of this endlessly optimistic, cheerful and sunny world with music to match.
The funny thing there.. 'gay' back then actually meant what it was supposed to mean: Happy.
I was shocked by this too. I grew up watching them when they resurged on Nick at Nite in the mid-80s. I thought they were new then, not 20 years before then!
I know what I'll be singing to my son tonight before I put him to bed.
One of the things that made me smile (in a good way) was reading in several recent books on the Beatles, how John Lennon & Paul McCartney had some affection for The Monkees. I caught heat from my peers for liking them back then. Sure they were put together, but they also fought quite publicly with the suits to do their own records. Davy had an acting career prior to the Monkees TV show, as did Mickey Dolenz.Davy Jones was a genuine teen idol.
I immediately set my Monkess collection on the iPod to shuffle when I heard the news. Very sad to hear another of my childhood idols has gone.
RIP Davy!
