I am looking for a Radio app on the Watch that allows listening to radio independent of the phone. So far, I only find apps that remote control the phone app, like TuneIn. I would like to listen to radio via cellular on the watch without having the phone with me. And no, I do not mean those few free stations on Apple Music (I do not have a subscription). I am listening mainly to classical music and soundtracks. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for your replies. I live in Germany, where the out of the box stations are very limited and iHeartradio is not available. But I will look at Streamlets, although it is a paid app and I just want to play around with radio a little, so I am not sure if it is worth it. On the other hand it costs not much. Perhaps there are other options like Streamlets? It has only one review, which is bothering me a little.

In Spain, RadioFM España is great, even with support for audio without headphones.

I do not know if it is available also in Germany or other markets.

The built-in Music / Radio app works fine, and uses Tunein for the stations. Subscription to AM not required.

Use Siri get the first time, then will appear in recently played in the Radio app, like this “Hey Siri, play radio station xxx”.

Thank you, I didnt know that. Unfortunately it only works for 2 seconds or so, than the music stops and doesn’t start again, only the wheel turning. Any idea what the problem might be? I do have internet connection working, since Siri works.

Maybe just wait a bit longer for it to buffer.

Great. I’ve used Streamlets for years at the gym or beach when I don’t want to bring my iPhone along.

I tried, but it never starts playing again. I have no idea, what the problem is. I fear that I encounter the same if I buy Streamlets.

Strange, I just tried again, and it worked flawlessly! Must indeed have been a bad connection. Thanks a lot, I had never read about this built in radio function. It is a real hidden gem!

myTuner Radio Pro. Works perfectly on Apple Watch!

myTuner Radio Pro works like a charm, really slick little interface is very nice. I tried Streamlets and absolutely hate it, it keeps dropping the stations, if you are even lucky enough to tune into them! absolutely rubbish.

Thanks for the heads up on myTuner Radio Pro 👍

MyTuner Radio does not work at all if the iPhone is not nearby and switched on. Not a standalone app as I hoped for.

Does the Apple Watch even have an active FM tuner?

I've noticed all the apps like iHeart, tuneIn, and Apple Music all do radio over wifi, so you're not hearing the real station, just a spliced up version with ads inserted over the local ads and even while the station is playing. It kinda sucks and ruins the experience for me.

All radio apps are like remote control only Apple Music and streamlets app
The only way I found for independent radio app on the watch is dictating Siri to play Radio xyz. Then this station is played via integrated TuneIn.

No, the watch does not have a tuner, but internet radio works as mentioned.

I installed Streamlets on 17.7 and it worked fine until yesterday. Yesterday I wanted to add more to my favorite stations (those worked normally and played without problems). But no other radios can be found. When I put "Contries" or "Tag/Genre" it shows "Loading" and nothing is found. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, restarting my Apple Watch, but nothing helped. Of course, I lost my favorite stations and the application is therefore not functional. The app was working normally and now unfortunately not. I have an Apple Watch Ultra and WatchOS 9.6. I don't know if the malfunction of the application is related to the last system update.

I wrote to the author of the application and he told me the following:

"It appears the radio-browser website is experiencing problems today. I'll reach out to their admin to see if they know when it'll be back up and running."

Anyone having the same problem with the app?

so I installed the Streamlets on my new SE Gen2 Cel. it works smoothly after I did a "change server". Thanks for the info and the recommendation! It seems it is the only standalone radio app indeed
