So I have 2 Issues that I was hoping to get some guidance On.
First issue.
I have horrible luck with HDDs going bad. So right now I have a bunch of different HDDs with the same stuff all floating around. I have a WD 1TB and a few WD passports in different sizes. I have a rather large music collection, a REALLY large movie collection and also priceless movies and pictures of my son. basically a bunch of stuff that if I lost would make me really pissed.
I was looking at some of the Raid options that companies like OTW offer and they have some real nice stand alone stuff for like $350ish.
Second Issue.
My Wife and Mother are obsessed with buying my son DVDs. I pretty sure he has about 95% of every Disney movie ever made. If you have "song of the south" on DVD you know you have quiet a collection
Well being 2 and a half, he is starting to get really rough with stuff. It seems like every time someone dosnt have an eye on him he is rummaging through his DVDs. we have a small pile of ones that are now scratched enough to skip pretty bad.
I figured as much as it is going to suck, its may be advantageous to bust out the handbreak and start backing everything up. Which leads me to my possible solution to issue 1 and 2
Instead of buying one of those stand alone Raid units, Could I get a cheap Mac, Like a non intel pro tower and put a few (like 4) 1 TB drives in them?
I mean i know I COULD do this but heres the issue. Im only a few months into my Mac experience (and loving it) but that being said im still learning a lot. Are there any major drawbacks to using a non intel Mac to do what I want to do?
Summary:
Raid setup for Movies, Family videos, Family pictures ect
+
Handbreak machine for the copious amounts of DVDs that my monster is destroying.
What are the pros and cons to doing this? What are some things I should look for in an older Mac? Being right outside Chicago, Craigslist is PACKED with older Macs. I just don't know what to look for and what is a good buy.
Budget for used Pro tower and 4ish 1TB HDDs
Any help would be HIGHLY appreciate.
