Raise to speak doesn't work while laying down?

Am I the only one or is that actually a thing? I was in bed and too lazy to respond to a message so tried to send a voice file but had to sit up for it to actually work. Otherwise my ear would just accidentally send my location.

I haven't tried it, but to be honest it doesn't really surprise me too much that it doesn't work. They need to be careful that only a certain motion will trigger the function... if you allow too many options then you may with up with a lot of false triggers. I suspect that actually raising the phone is part of the required motion.

Did you hold the phone vertically (as you normally would) or horizontally basically (as you would lying down essentially)?

Both, actually. I was trying to see if it would work either way.
