I've just placed an order with Apple for a new iMac 27

  • 4.0GHz QC i7, TB up to 4.2GHz
  • 8GB 1867MHz DDR3L (2x4GB)
  • 512GB Flash Storage
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395X w/4GB
I'm wanting to upgrade the RAM myself.

What's the recommended brand and spec of the RAM I should use?

My use will be FCPX and eventually logic pro - I'm not 100% sure how much RAM is recommended to be honest.

Whatever I use I think I'd prefer to have matching dimms - so probably will go with 16Gb (additional 2 x 4gb sticks) or 32Gb (replace with 4 x 8gb sticks)

I noticed those 16Gb sticks but no way I can afford the price of 64GB hehe. Wife would kill me!

From my options below I think the 32Gb is the sweet spot - especially if I can recoup some $ selling the original 8Gb:

a) Buy 2 x 8Gb sticks for $239.99AUD (Total usable 24Gb)
$14.99 per additional usable Gb.
b) Buy 4 x 8Gb sticks for $434.99AUD (Total usable 32Gb) - original 2 x 4Gb sticks left over
$18.12 per additional usable Gb
c) Buy 2 x 16Gb sticks for $789.99AUD (Total usable 40Gb)
$24.68 per additional usable Gb

Not sure how many people need 32GB but then again I just spent more than this for a new car battery.

I almost always buy Crucial for their quality and lifetime warentee

Just a thought, but…
… don't just add RAM as soon as you unpack it.

Run with 8gb for a week or so.
If by then you KNOW you need more RAM, buy it.

Already bought :) I'm pretty certain I wont need the 32Gb, but figured what the heck.
