Why are the ram coolers in my powermac g5 so hot?

Perhaps because they were taking heat off the RAM. Same reason why CPU heatsinks are really hot.

If your RAM coolers are not hot it means there is no heat transfer from the RAM chip to your RAM coolers, hence it is not effective. Don't worry about heatsinks being hot, that is the purpose of a heatsink to take away heat from the active device and transfer it to the RAM cooler.

So all that heat is being taken off the ram? The heat sinks are so hot they could leave a burn mark.
