RAM manage, compress, on older machines

I am trying to figure out how well Mavericks works with older 3,1 Mac Pro.

I use the computer for the following:
- itunes library
- general web browsing
- several vmware fusion machines

How well will the host OS run and manage RAM?

Currently I run ML.
I am thinking of selling my machine now and use a old 1.83 iMac or Macbook to get me by and buy a used 4,1 MP come January.

It run just fine on my 2008 Mac Pro in my signature but I firmly believe this is the version of OS X it will run.
