Sorry if this has been asked before. Please help me understand how ram allocation works. I have 16GB ram on my imac 2011 and allocated 4GB to Parallels for Windows 7. Are these 4GB gone forever, even when I don't use Win 7? Or are they available to windows 7 only when I open parallels? Also, if parallels is shut down, do I have all 16GB ram available for Lion or just 12GB?

The 4 GB of RAM is only used when you virtualized. When you shut down the virtual machine, it gets released and you have all 16 GB.
