I only have enough money to afford a backup hard drive or an upgrade from 4GB to 8GB. 4GB is doing just fine for me right now, but I've heard that Lion, which I'll inevitably be upgrading to, doesn't run all that smooth on 4GB. As for the hard drive, it'd also probably be wise to have before I upgrade to Lion. So, which one is the best choice at the moment?

As someone who, many years ago, had a drive go down and lost a lot of valuable and irreplaceable data, I'd go for a backup hard drive every time.

Generally speaking, for normal use, the supplied 4GB of RAM is perfectly adequate. However, have an HDD crash and, unless you have a backup, you're in trouble!
