I have 96Gb in the 7,1 right now over 12 sticks. Was thinking of upgrading to 128Gb. Looks like I can do it either in 8x16Gb or 4x32Gb. I take it there isn't a performance difference doing it on 4 instead of 8?

Either way, you're straying from the 6 memory channels. With only 4 you're leaving capacity empty and unusable. I'd be tempted to try to stretch for 12x16, or 6x32.

It is always best to use whatever is dictated by the memory channels. No difference from PCs.
mattspace is correct. And use DIMMS that are of the same spec, for best results.
I have 6*16GB = 96GB, and 6*32GB = 192GB in my machines.
And I would rather choose 6*64GB = 384GB, over 12*32GB = 384GB, for the same reason

Thanks for the clarification - I misread a bit on the Apple docs page about for best performance use either 6 or 12 dimms. With that in mind 128Gb wouldn't be possible. Looking at the memory from OWC it would be 6 or 12 for 192Gb which is $430/470+ instead of $299/320 which is a bit more than I was looking to spend.

What about using memory.net and going for sk-hynix?

I was looking there recently and prices were decent.
