RAM Usage When Downloading to External HDD

Hello,

I have a new model iMac and have a Western Digital MyBook Studio external hard drive plugged in via FireWire 800.

When I'm downloading files and saving them straight to my external hard drive, my RAM usage seems to shoot up, so I'm just wondering if this is some weird coincidence, or does the Mac save them temporarily on RAM then shift them over?

Perhaps somebody with a bit more experience could explain?
