How is the configuration on the macbooks work? Do they have two ram slots? If my macbook has 1 GB memory, does it actually have 2 x 512 chips, filling up the two slots (if there is two slots). Can I upgrade these myself w/o voiding any warranty? Thanks.

MacBooks have 2 RAM slots. 1Gb of factory fitted will be in 2x512Mb format to enable dual-channel mode which is slightly faster.

RAM is considered user upgradable: there are instructions on Apple's website.
